Once you have a carpet, it is paramount that you take steps to preserve it and care for it. Without paying attention to the vulnerabilities of your carpet, you can create lasting damage. So take a look at what you can do to increase the lifespan of your carpet.
1. Lift Your Furniture
Every time you move your heavy furniture, you will have undoubtedly noticed the divots in the carpet created beneath the legs. This damage is to be expected, and many carpets bounce back from these depressions. But if you drag furniture on the carpet, you will get a more lasting result.
Compressing carpet fibers under a weighty piece of furniture does stress the material, but not nearly as much as scrubbing something heavy across them. Whenever you have to move furniture, it is preferable to lift and plant rather than drag.
2. Watch Your Pets
Pets get dirty in ways that are not immediately obvious. For example, their coats can pick up pollen and microscopic allergens and plant them on the carpet. But that will not damage the carpet nearly as much as insects or oily substances.
Pets can also scratch at carpets, which is even worse if their claws are not trimmed. And obviously, there is the issue of making sure pets do not relieve themselves on the carpet. Once the carpet is stained with urine or feces, the animal may continue this behavior until the surface is professionally cleaned.
3. Control Foot Traffic
One of the most extreme things people will do to keep their carpet from getting damaged is to keep the room off limits except for special occasions. This does reduce the livability of a space, but it is extremely effective for making sure the carpet is not stressed.
A less extreme step is to make sure that the feet that land on the carpet are not wearing shoes. Shoes can track a lot more on them than socks. (However socks can contain a lot of sweat). Slipping into a pair of soft house shoes is most ideal for walking on carpets.
4. No Drinks Or Food
Perhaps the most common types of stains come from food and drinks. This staining happens organically as people eat casually and transport liquids from room to room. Even food eaten over a table can leave crumbs that fall to the carpet-covered floor.
Water from a spilled glass is not going to create much of an issue, and dry food can be vacuumed up. For drinks, the problem is mainly coffee, juice, wine, dark soft drinks, and similar substances. Problematic foods are oily or sauce-coated ones.
